Celebrities Who Used Surrogates
They are rich, attractive, famous and blessed with darling little ones – and even though they struggled with fertility issues and went the surrogacy route, these celebrities and celebrity couples sure look utterly happy next to their adorable kids these days. If you’re curious to find out which stars opted for surrogates in order to welcome their children into this world, then keep on reading!
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
This couple scores big points in the adorableness department: she, an ultra-talented A-list actress and him, a country music legend. We’re obviously talking about Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, the Australian couple who welcomed their second child through a surrogate back in December 2010: Faith Margaret. Nicole and Keith are also the proud parents of Sunday Rose, now eight years-old, in addition to Nicole’s adoptive children from her first 10 year-long marriage with megastar Tom Cruise. Talking about her experience with motherhood and the various ways she created her family, Nicole mentioned: “I suppose my maternal instincts and drive has always been there since I was little … and that’s a huge driving force of who I am, which is why I probably played it out in so many different ways.”
Jimmy Fallon and Nancy Fallon
TV host and comedian Jimmy Fallon and his wife Nancy Fallon are yet another cute couple who decided to go the surrogacy route, after years of trying to conceive a child the natural way. The couple’s daughter was born in 2013, and shortly after, her famous father divulged that while their fertility struggles were awful, it was all worth it in the end: “We tried for a long time, for five years. I know people have tried much longer, but if there’s anyone out there who is trying and they’re just losing hope . . . just hang in there. Try every avenue; try anything you can do, ’cause you’ll get there. You’ll end up with a family, and it’s so worth it.”
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
She’s known for her sassy fashionista role as the one and only Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City (and more recently, you’ve seen her in Divorce) and he’s still making us laugh every time we rewatch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (for the nineteenth time). Sarah Jessica Parker and Metthew Broderick are the parents of three adorable and happy kids – Jessica gave birth to the couple’s first child back in 2002, a son named James Wilkie Broderick – and seven years later, the couple went the surrogacy route and welcomed their twin girls Marion and Tabitha into the world. While the two famous actors did not plan on having twins, they were both delighted with the news that they were going to become a family of five.
Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman
This next couple on our Celebrities Who Used Surrogates list also dealt with their own fair share of fertility struggles. Pitch Perfect actress, producer and director Elizabeth Banks opened up to the press about her medical issues that prevented her from carrying a child, saying: “It was a womb issue for me. Embryos wouldn’t implant.” But the actress and her husband Mark Handelman could not be happier about their decision of opting for a surrogate, saying: “It’s a big leap, inviting this person into your life to do this amazing, important thing for you. And it’s hard losing that kind of control. But our surrogate is so extraordinary, and she’s still in our lives. She’s like an auntie.”
Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower
There are various reasons why famous couples go the surrogacy route, from medical problems to simple preferences – but in this next couple’s case, the deciding factor was their age. Robert De Niro was in his late 60s and his wife in her mid-50s when, back in 2011, they welcomed a baby girl into the world. And while the ultra-talented actor was overjoyed to the max, it wasn’t his first time experiencing fatherhood – in fact, he is the proud father of no less than five other children, two of which were also born via surrogacy 22 years ago.
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
For this next adorable couple, adoption and surrogacy were the only available options – and as you might have guessed, they went with the latter. How I Met Your Mother alumni Neil Patrick Harris and his handsome husband David Burtka wed back in 2014, but had their kids via surrogacy back in 2010: twin girl and boy, namely Harper and Gideon. As for the actual procedure, Neil opened up to the press, saying: ‘We inserted one of my sperm and one of David’s sperm into two eggs with the hope that they would both take, just because we both wanted to be dads biologically. Both took, miraculously.’
Lucy Liu
From Kill Bill to Charlie’s Angels and Ally McBeal, this next stunning actress has been a busy bee for the past two decades. And that’s precisely the reason why she opted to become a mother via surrogacy. We’re talking about now-48 years-old Lucy Liu, who introduced her son Rockwell Lloyd to the world back in August 2015, with a sweet Instagram post. As for the reason why she chose surrogacy, the actress mentioned: “It just seemed like the right option for me because I was working and I didn’t know when I was going to be able to stop. I decided that was probably the best solution for me, and it turned out to be great.”
George Lucas and Mellody Hobson
He’s a big name in Hollywood land and she is the current Chair of the Board of Directors of DreamWorks Animation – and 25 years his junior. The happy couple wed back in 2013, right before being blessed with a baby girl. Creator of Star Wars and Indiana Jones George Lucas became a father for the fourth time in 2013 at the age of 69, when he and his entrepreneur wife Mellody Hobson welcomed their daughter via surrogacy. The Hollywood mogul is also the proud father of three other children, all adopted during his marriage with Marcia Griffin.
Tyra Banks and Eric Asla
43 year-old supermodel and America’s Next Top Model creator Tyra Banks and her long-time partner and famous photographer Erik Asla became parents for the first time as a couple in 2016, when they welcomed their son Yorks through surrogacy. And as you might have expected, Tyra commemorated the big event with a photo-shoot and a ‘smizing’ snap on Instagram, with the caption: “The best present we worked and prayed so hard for is finally here. He’s got my fingers and big eyes and his daddy Erik’s mouth and chin.”
Ricky Martin
Ricky Martin came out of the closet and declared the world that he was a gay man back in 2010, but two years before that, he decided to become a single father when he opted for a surrogate to carry his children. The talented singer was blessed with twin boys Matteo and Valentino, who are currently nine years-old. And while some celebs don’t keep in touch with the women that carried their children, Ricky has the utmost respect for the woman who allowed him to be a father, saying: “I saw the picture and I said: Who is this woman so angelic, so transparent. I would give my life for the woman who helped me bring my sons into this world.”
